On July 30, a Syrian soldier was killed and six others were wounded when a Turkish suicide drone struck Menagh Air Base in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The air base fell into the hands of ISIS in 2013. Three years later, it was captured by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, the core unit of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In 2018, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) returned to the base under an agreement with the SDF.
Neither the Syrian Ministry of Defense, nor the SDF has yet commented on the claims made by the SOHR, a London-based monitoring group with unclear funding.
In the morning, a Turkish drone strike hit the center of Tell Rifaat town, some seven kilometers to the southeast of Menagh Air Base. Only material losses were reported. The town is held by the SDF. However, both the SAA and the Russian Military Police maintain a presence there.
Two other Turkish drone strikes hit SDF territory in northern and eastern Syria earlier in the week, killing seven fighters of the group and wounding at least ten others.
If confirmed, the Turkish drone strike on Menagh Air Base would be a major escalation by Ankara. The unprovoked strike could have a bad impact on the Turkish-Syrian normalization process. Just a few days ago, Russian media reported preparations for a new meeting between the foreign ministers of Turkey and Syria.
