Ukrainian counter offensive has been ongoing on the southern frontlines for more than a week. Despite some tactical gains, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are yet to reach the first line of Russian main defences in the Zaporozhie region.
South of Velikaya Novoselka, clashes are ongoing on the southern outskirts of Urozhainoe, after the Russian military withdrew from their positions in the village. The settlement is currently in the grey zone.
On August 13, the Russian military attempted a counterattack but failed to repel the AFU from the village. According to Russian military reports, the Russian military faced the lack of counter-battery fire in the area.
Russian Marines of the Pacific Fleet secured the withdrawal from Urozhainoe. In particular, servicemen of the 40th Marine Brigade reported on August 14 that they had destroyed Ukrainian reconnaissance group in the village, when the AFU decided to check if their positions on the streets were secured. On the same day, the Russian military reported that their artillery destroyed Ukrainian platoon crossing across the Mokrye Yaly river between Urozhainoe and Ztaromayorskoe.
Russian forces are currently strengthening their positions in Staromlynovka. If the AFU succeed to gain a foothold in the area and secure their positions in Urozhainoe and Staromayourskoe, Russian fighters may retreat southwards up to 8 kilometers towards the main line of defence, the so-called ‘line of Surovikin’. There is also the small village of Zavitne Bazhannya on the Ukrainian way.
Fighting near Rabotino:
In the region of Orekhov, the AFU continue attacks in the area of Rabotino. Despite all Ukrainian attempts, the village remains under the full control of Russian forces. On August 13, Russian forces launched a counterattack to the north of the village, capturing several Ukrainian positions. On August 14, Small groups of the AFU continued storming the village.
Clashes are also ongoing to the south of Malaya Tokmachka.
On August 14, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that:
In the South Donetsk direction, units of the Vostok group of troops, supported by Russian aviation, artillery fire and heavy flamethrower systems, defeated Ukrainian units in the areas of Urozhnoye and Staromayorskoye of the Donetsk People’s Republic. As a result of the fighting, up to 240 Ukrainian servicemen, three armored combat vehicles, three cars, two US-made M777 artillery systems, as well as a French-made self-propelled artillery installation “Cezar” were destroyed.
In the Zaporozhye direction, during the day, units of the Russian grouping of troops with the support of artillery in the area of Rabotino repelled two Ukrainian attacks, and also destroyed Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group. The losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine amounted to more than 50 Ukrainian servicemen, a tank, two infantry fighting vehicles, three vehicles, an M777 artillery system made by the USA, a self-propelled artillery installation “Cezar” made by France, as well as a self-propelled artillery installation “Krab” made by Poland.
In the Kherson direction, as a result of fire damage during the day, Ukrainian losses amounted to up to 30 Ukrainian servicemen, three cars, as well as a self-propelled mortar “Alacran” made in Spain.
The Ukrainian military attempted to catch Russian Lancet drone with Chinese Mavik. As a result, Ukrainian positions were destroyed:
